A woman recently came into my office complaining of low back pain for 30 years. For all those years she had been searching for answers to her problems but had not been able to find one. It had gotten so bad that she could not do any prolonged activity for more than an hour without bringing her to tears. It affected her mood and even relationships. I gave her first adjustment on a Friday. On Monday when I saw her next she was elated to deliver the news…..she forgot that her low back was supposed to hurt after three hours of activity! She finally found the answer that no other doctors could give her. She is a month into adjustments and has been pain free for about a week now. After 30 years her body has rewarded her with a normal life because we addressed the problem and not the symptom. Her demeanor has completely changed each time I see her. We see this all the time in our office and it never gets old to hear how excited people can get when you are able to help them. If you know of anyone that has been ailing for way too long, encourage them to try our approach to Health. We may change their life!

Wellness is defined as the quality or state of being in good by the world Health experts. Wellness is crucial for reaching optimal Health. There are many steps that can be taken to move toward a well lifestyle.

Obviously diet is a big part of that. Keep in mind that everything you eat in some way becomes a part of you. Essentially each time you eat you are building your body for the future with each meal. Nutrition is another big part. Despite how hard one may try it is very difficult to obtain all the necessary nutrients through diet alone. Therefore, it is very important to make sure you are getting proper nutrition on a daily basis.

Finally, Chiropractic is an essential step. What we do is not only to get people out of pain. Matter of fact, pain is a small portion of what we help. Our goal is to remove nerve pressure that causes nerve interference that results in a lesser functioning body. A lesser functioning body is not a well one. Chiropractic, proper diet and nutrition should all be considered regular habits and steps to take to ensure a wellness lifestyle.

Yours in Health,

Dr. Brett Wood, DC

Fatigue is a common problem for people to suffer within today’s lifestyle. Often times the problem is not a lack of sleep; it’s a lack of proper diet, nutrition and Chiropractic adjustments.

We have so much sugar in our diets that creates a quick spike in energy followed by a crash. In order to counteract this crash we use caffeine, more sugar, caffeine and more sugar. Eventually our energy levels plummet and all we can think of is sleep.

Sometimes it may not be a caffeine/sugar problem, it’s possible to have a reasonable diet but still be lacking in proper nutrition. B-vitamins and other supplements that support your adrenal function (energy hormones) may need to be added to the diet.

Finally, some people find that when their nervous systems are not functioning properly their energy levels aren’t either. Chiropractic care will balance the nervous system and cam help restore energy levels back to where they should be in order to make our days more productive.

I think we often times forget that our bodies are always trying to do what is best for us. Tight muscles around the spine, for example, are a protective mechanism attempting to hold something in place that is trying to move out of place (subluxation). It is not a result of a muscle relaxer deficiency. Pain is an alarm system that your body turns on to alert you about a problem. It is very similar to indicators on the dashboard of your car, when you take care of the problem, they turn off. Very few if any attempt to turn off those indicators without addressing the problem.

Unfortunately, medications cover up or prevent our bodies from trying to do what is best. Certainly this cannot be how true Health is obtained. Rest assured that Chiropractic care performed with precision works with your body to improve function which ultimately gets you Healthier.

For just about every person out there I recommend fish oil because of the tremendous amount of Health benefits of it. It is an essential fatty acid which means it has to be obtained from diet; your body cannot manufacture it. It is an Omega 3 fatty acid that is also found in almonds and some other nuts. We get the fish oil from fish, naturally, but it is because down the chain the smaller ones are eating plants and sea vegetation. It is from this that we get the fatty acid. For a similar reason cows that are grass fed have a much healthier ratio of good fats to bad fats as opposing cows that are grain fed. Some of its many benefits are:

Heart Health

Anti-inflammatory

Aids in ADD/ADHD

Healthy lipids

Joint Health

Immune Health

Skin

Healthy Hair

Healthy Pregnancy

Depression

Arthritis

Weight loss

There is every reason to take this as staple in our diets. Even if we consume fish, you can’t be assured you are getting all you need.

She told me that his mother had been following the MD’s instructions and continually giving the child medications but was not getting any better, actually somewhat worse. A friend had recommended a book to the child’s mother called “The Makers Diet” by Jordan Rubin. In the book he discusses the importance of eating a whole food diet without any processed food. The mother decided to change her child’s diet and inevitably changed his life.

In a short time he began to grow, his digestion functioned much better and ADHD corrected. On a subsequent visit to the MD his progress was given, as to which the Doctor was excited. He said to keep up the medications and she informed him that the child had not been taking any, just following a whole food diet.

Initially frustrated with her not following his instructions, the MD did not agree with her choice. Eventually he said to keep it up but wanted her to continue medications. The problem was not a lack of medication; it was simply a lack of nutrition through diet. Many Health issues that people have can be dramatically improved with dietary changes. Essentially, it is up to us if we want to be Healthy.

I just returned from a Gonstead seminar in Chicago last weekend. I have been attending these since I started school to better myself as a Doctor and teacher. I have the opportunity to learn from the best, some of which actually practiced with Dr. Gonstead himself.

I heard an amazing story at the seminar discussing some old history about Dr Gonstead that I would like to share. Going back to the beginning, D.D. Palmer founded Chiropractic in 1895. D.D, had a friend, J.B. Olsen, that he persuaded to go to his Chiropractic school. The two studied and lived together.

J.B. Olsen became the Chiropractor that helped a young engineer named Clarence Gonstead whose family could not find a solution to his rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Olsen was able to help Clarence which inspired him to go to Chiropractic school. In 1923, Gonstead graduated and began to develop his technique which is what I continue to better myself at every day.

The man who told me this story, Dr. Alex Cox, worked side by side with Gonstead as his apprentice and eventually his successor. As I was listening to him talk I realized the amazing lineage involved. I have learned from Dr. Alex, who learned from Dr Gonstead, who learned from Dr Olsen, who was very close to the founder of Chiropractic….Daniel David Palmer.

I am constantly trying to duplicate the work of the amazing Chiropractors before me and hope to one day help some younger Docs after me. Passion and philosophy are a very important part of practicing true Chiropractic and am I very thankful to be a part of it.

Most of us start our days off in a similar fashion. We wake up, shower, eat breakfast, brush our teeth, and move on towards our days fraught with activity. Through our normal daily routines, we regularly come into contact with toxins, that unbeknownst to us accumulate in our bodies. This toxic accumulation often results in a myriad of health related complications including; fatigue, poor concentration, digestive trouble, insomnia, joint pain, skin rashes and even bad breath. For those who have failed to find relief from these common health concerns, many may benefit from a nutritionally focused full-body cleanse.

From the food we eat to the air we breathe, toxins in the form of pesticides are all around us. Globally speaking, there are over 2.5 million tons applied annually, most of which are targeted at agricultural crops. Approximately 250 basic chemicals made by more than 50 companies are registered for use as pesticides in food and animal feed in the United States. Many of these pesticides are screened as both carcinogens and endocrine disrupters an eventually find their way into our meals. Endocrine disrupters are chemicals that imitate the body’s own hormonal systems and consequently disrupt chemical communication. Because of this, many scientists believe the alarming rise in hormonally driven cancers, such as breast and prostate, may be due to the ability of these chemicals to act like hormones in the body.

In addition, the water we drink, whether filtered, tap or bottled under the premise of a “mountain spring” also contain beneficial, yet toxic, materials like Fluoride and Chlorine. Both products have been praised for their additions to modern society; Fluoride for its teeth sparing and Chlorine for its disinfectant qualities. Despite their wide-spread uses across many applications, the use of these products does come with a price.

Although topically it has been proven beneficial for dental health, fluoride is not as advantageous when ingested (the very reason we rinse our mouths after brushing our teeth). In fact, fluoride can be down-right toxic to the nervous system, impairing immune function and suppressing the thyroid gland. The latter of which led to its use as a treatment for hyperthyroidism in the mid 20th century. Currently, the United States is the world’s largest consumer of fluoridated water, taking in more than 50% of the world’s supply. As for chlorine, it reacts with other naturally occurring elements in our water supply creating byproducts which have been linked to a wide range of diseases ranging from asthma to eczema. Of course, there are many more toxins out there from pollution to smoke and from synthetics to heavy metals that can all cause harm.

Help your body, help yourself:

Thankfully, our bodies are equipped with the tools we need to normally detoxify, we do it everyday. The main organ for detoxification is our liver and the main ways that we manage toxins are through digestion, excretion and respiration. These processes will work optimally when we treat ourselves as such. Unfortunately, that is not often the reality and routine intervention may be necessary. Take going to the dentist for example; we may brush and floss our teeth every day, yet we still routinely go to the dentist for a little extra help. Consider detoxification as another extremely healthy practice similar to your twice yearly visits to the dentist. I’m sure we have heard some horror stories about it, “you’ll be in the bathroom most of your day” or “you don’t eat for a week” and I’m sure there are others. However, choosing the right detoxification program will most likely have you avoiding those unwanted side effects.

Choosing the program that is right for you:

There are several different cleanses to choose from; a liver cleanse, a colon cleanse, fasting and a total body cleanse. The program I recommend most often for its overall health benefits and ease of administration is the 21-day total body cleanse. Although all cleanses can be a healthy practice, it’s hard to beat the Twenty-One’s amazing overall benefit. I feel that you need at least that amount of time to be thorough enough. I know what you are thinking, Twenty-one days may seem like a long time, but in the grand perspective it is only 3 weeks out of the year. Trust me, the benefits are worth it.

How it works:

The first step requires some sacrifice as you learn to eliminate the things you shouldn’t be eating any way. Most notably, refined sugars such as high fructose, dairy (we are the only animal that has any past infancy), processed foods, alcohol, caffeine and wheat. This is best to be started shortly before the actual cleanse begins. Most people don’t drink enough water, so begin increasing your intake. I like to aim for a gallon of water daily. I’m sure you may be thinking, “So what do I eat then?” Don’t worry, it is easier than it seems.

For the first 10 days you eat mostly vegetables and fruits, mostly the former of which at least half should be eaten raw. It is important to know that we should eat organic whenever possible. I know that it can be expensive so if you choose to purchase only some organic items, then it should be the ones that normally contain the highest amount of pesticides. Those are apples, bell peppers, cherries, strawberries, grapes, spinach, pears and celery. During this time some supplementation will be necessary to aid in the process of purification. The first 7 days of supplements are designed for cleansing out your system. It is a gentle healthy cleanse, not a run for the bathroom type. The supplements starting on day 8 are designed for replenishment, to ensure that you are maximizing the nutrition. If you don’t use it already something that you have to start and should for the rest of your life is fish oil. The unbelievable wealth of benefit from this alone is almost unparalleled. Daily fruit smoothies, tailored to your liking, will have an adequate source of protein. Exercise, even at the most beginner level, is important to incorporate to get the heart beating and speed up detoxification. Using a dry sauna if you have access to one is a valuable tool to sweat. At our home we hardly, if ever, use the microwave to heat food. It is such a rapid heating that it destroys up to 90% of the nutrition of the food, so steam your veggies, in particular if you need them cooked. Basically, if you take the time to eat quality foods then make it worth it.

The final 11 days you maintain the same diet and begin incorporating some high quality protein in the form of wild salmon, organic chicken and free-range, grass fed beef. Along the way you will find that there are many recipes to help add variety to what could become a monotonous diet. It is important to know that even during a successful program, the first few days may have you experiencing fatigue, fogginess, headaches, and sweating as your body begins the cleansing process. These are often times the result of breaking a caffeine or sugar addiction. Ironically these might be some symptoms you are trying to rid yourself of. Although not favorable, if experienced these are all normal signs your body goes through to detoxification. Soon after you will emerge and start to see the changes as your body rids itself of those unwanted toxins.

The Results:

our body will appreciate the help and in the end will show this appreciation with increased energy, substantial weight loss, improved concentration and a whole wealth of benefits. For some, their blood sugar has normalized and for others their allergies have greatly improved. The long-term goals of doing this type of cleanse extend beyond the 21 days. Often once people learn to live without certain foods, they realize in trying to eat them again that their favorite foods were the ones that actually made them feel sub-par to begin with. So, developing new habits and learning more about your body can be invaluable in a lifetime of good health. In going forward try to minimize some of the things that bring you to such a toxic state and move on with a healthier way of living. Drink more filtered and if possible, use reverse osmosis water. Minimize microwave use and cook your food slower. Eat organic whenever possible. Supplement with good antioxidants, fish oil and vitamins. Begin a well planned exercise program. It may not be as easy as our normal routine, but 21 days is a short time of sacrifice for such a great benefit and life of new habits. A New Year’s cleanse is the perfect way to jump start your 2011 search for greater health. Many of my patients start their year with it and they absolutely love it. Our world has changed dramatically since the Industrial Revolution, isn’t it time that our diets caught up? I strongly encourage you to speak to a health care professional about doing a cleanse.

Yours In Health,

Well everyone, we are back from our vacation and ready to get to you all.

We had an awesome vacation and got to meet lots of new people. It was interesting to talk to all of them about our profession. Some people had an idea of what we do and some had none at all. I heard “it feels good to crack your back” and “my friend takes her baby to one of you.” Sure both of those are true statements, however, the fundamental purpose of us is to remove nerve interference to better our bodies function. Your nervous system controls everything…everything and if it can’t control something at 100% then something no longer works at 100%.

If you have a misalignment in your spine it will create inflammation. That inflammation will put pressure onto a nerve. That pressure can eventually trigger your bodies alarm system being symptoms and most importantly decreases your function. This is what may lead to poor health, not just short term but long as well.

The winter is quickly approaching and sickness is almost certain to follow. If you are not properly adjusted then you may find your immune system is compromised and may just end up sick. Take preventative steps to better your Health through Chiropractic and proper nutrition. We can’t wait to see you all again soon!

Some of you may have read a blog I wrote a while back regarding my Grandmother and an unnecessary surgery that was done for her low back pain. She lives down in Victoria, TX and was in desperate need of a Gonstead Chiropractor. Unfortunately, the closest one to her was in Austin.

About a month ago she took a trip to Austin and got her first adjustment. After all she has been through she is about 90% better! The specificity of the Gonstead technique is something I have written about before, but that is undoubtedly what she was in need of. There have been a couple patients here in my office lately that getting them better was the difference between adjusting just two vertebra in the same area. If my approach was to adjust all of the vertebra in the area then I may not have been able to get them better.

On another note, Dr. Carolyn has been extensively researching nutritional needs for our patients. Along with Chiropractic, proper nutrition can help to achieve dramatically improved Health. If you are interested in going through a nutritional consult with her please contact Stephanie and she will be more than happy to get you scheduled for that visit.
